Chapter 1<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nI look down at the white stick in my hand and see the impossible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two pink lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I pick up the other one, and this one says what the other suggests: PREGNANT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I sink down on the toilet lid. \u201cNo! No, no, no, no, no!\u201d I close my eyes and shake my head until it swims. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
One night with a real asshole is all it took, and this is what came of it. The situation is unreal. I can\u2019t believe it. How could I be so stupid? Alcohol and penises just don\u2019t mix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There\u2019s a pounding on the bathroom door. \u201cAdder! Tell me! Tell me, tell me! Are you\u2026 preggers?\u201d he whispers the last word like someone might hear. I grab my head and whimper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I do the futile and try to banish him, yelling through the door, \u201cJazzie, go away!\u201d I lean my head against the Pepto Bismol color wall of my apartment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou are<\/em>!\u201d He gasps, rattling the door. Finding it locked, he starts knocking like he\u2019s a Girl Scout with a cookie quota to make. \u201cLet me in! I need to see!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\nI stand, because my bathroom is closet-sized and unlock the door. Opening it, I wave Jazzie in and move to sit on the edge of our tub. He picks up the stick and then sets it down, cringing. \u201cYou tinkled on this. Augh! I forgot about that!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t pee all over it,\u201d I defend myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cKnowing you, that\u2019s debatable.\u201d He rolls his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I sigh. \u201cJazz, I\u2019m gonna toss you out in a second.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWill not, I\u2019m your best friend.\u201d He smirks. \u201cI\u2019m your only<\/em> friend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\u201cI can find more friends.\u201d I knock my head against the tile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBut we\u2019ve known one another since we were six. I came out to you when I was thirteen. We have history,\u201d he says smugly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are going to be<\/em> history,\u201d I sass.<\/p>\n\n\n\nJazzie ignores me, smiles before laughing joyfully. \u201cWe\u2019re going to be mothers!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I lift my arms in argument and let them fall to my thighs with a clap of defeat. \u201cI can\u2019t keep this baby!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou aren\u2019t talking about\u2026\u201d he whispers, \u201cabortion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m talking about having this baby and dropping it off on PJ Westgate\u2019s doorstep. He\u2019s got money, and you and I eat out of the clearance racks at Vons.\u201d I stand, grabbing the pee sticks and move out to the living room. I set the pregnancy tests down on our kitchen table, and Jazzie squeals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEwww! No! We eat here!\u201d He points at the table before going and grabbing napkins from our copious supply. We have a collection from nearly every fast food restaurant in the city. He lays out five, waves me to set down the sticks and makes a face. \u201cSo gross.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSeriously? I couldn\u2019t do the tests any other way. It was urine only, nothing else was acceptable.\u201d I give him a look of censure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He shivers like he\u2019s got the willies and sucks on his bottom lip. \u201cWhateves. Take a picture. Send it to him. NO! Better yet. Send it to the whole band. Blast it. Make it so it can\u2019t be ignored.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know. You\u2019re talking about rocking the boat\u2026 again. That didn\u2019t work so well last time. I lost my job and can\u2019t worm my way into working anywhere in the entertainment industry again.\u201d I look down at the tests. \u201cCheez Whiz. How am I going to afford the costs of being pregnant? It\u2019s expensive. I mean, my bank account is hurting just in food I lose in tossing my cookies back up these days.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWell, you do buy expensive cookies.\u201d Jazz sighs as I flip him off. \u201cWhat? You\u2019re a known cookie slut. I mean go with it. It\u2019s one slutting you can wear with relentless pride.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cJazz? How am I going to do this?\u201d I mutter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI have a great job.\u201d He hugs me. \u201cI\u2019ll help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I wrap my hands around my best friend. \u201cNo offense, but you\u2019re an Uber driver. You don\u2019t have any benefits. With me out of work, we are eking by. We can barely pay for this apartment.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I look around. Our apartment is delightful with its parquet floors and 40\u2019s-esque charm. Miracle Mile isn\u2019t the most overly sought after location in Los Angeles, but everywhere you go in the city, you pay more than you should. Our one bedroom is barely 800 square feet, it\u2019s small and over 2k\/month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
I got a great severance from CypherSphere when I was let go. I was a paid intern, which is a unicorn position in the industry. On top of that, I got a hush settlement to stop talking about what happened. Those two combined lasted six months. Not being able to find a job is an expense in itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
