But she\u2019s made her mark in the top\u00a0ten of her cadet class and she\u2019s ready to compete for what\u2019s next. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Excerpt<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The door slid open with a whoosh. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Jenna, human like Imogene, swiveled in her chair to face Imogene, grinning, her twin dimples deep in her cheeks and her hazel eyes twinkling. \u201cSince when do you knock? Usually you\u2019re yelling at me.\u201d Her smile lit up her cherubic face. She had round, rosy, apple cheeks with wide eyes that appeared innocent (she totally wasn\u2019t). Add to that her golden hair and engaging smile, Jenna was adorable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI always knock. A yell is a knock. I just wasn\u2019t sure you\u2019d be alone.\u201d Imogene wiggled her eyebrows suggestively and walked into the room, the door slipping closed behind her. She flopped on Jenna\u2019s bed. The room looked like most dorm rooms of an upper-classman who monitored a unit\u2014just like Imogene\u2019s. A bed, shelves, wardrobe, and a desk whose perks included a small kitchenette and a small bathroom with the centrifuge independent of the hall. Jenna had her room decorated with colors that reminded Imogene of images she\u2019d seen of the sea on Jenna\u2019s home planet, Lavi II. \u201cWho knows what might be happening behind closed doors when you\u2019re seeing someone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jenna blushed and swiveled back to face her Com glowing with the text. \u201cGood thing you weren\u2019t here earlier, then.\u201d She tapped the screen adding the open document for one of her classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhy? You did have a special guest?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSeveral of them.\u201d Jenna glanced over her shoulder with a grin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Imogene threw one of the fluffy pillows at Jenna who ducked and laughed. \u201cOh?\u201d She pushed a pillow behind her back and pulled another into her lap. \u201cDoes this harem have a group name?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe Fly team.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Imogene laughed. \u201cI bet Vempur could make that happen if you asked nicely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jenna blushed again. \u201cStop!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou\u2019re blushing. Since when do you blush?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI\u2019m kidding,\u201d Jenna said and turned her back to Imogene. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cMe too.\u201d Imogene studied Jenna a few more beats, watching as her friend made finishing touches to her essay and wondering if there was something she was missing. Jenna wasn\u2019t typically a blusher. She was audacious and funny, rarely embarrassed about anything. And though she\u2019d shared that she was seeing someone\u2014someone she hadn\u2019t introduced to the group yet because she \u201cwanted to make sure it was a real thing first\u201d\u2014Jenna didn\u2019t often check herself. Of their friend group, Jenna was the impetuous one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n That\u2019s how they\u2019d met, in fact. During a lunch at some point early as Year Threes, Imogene and Vempur had been eating in the Globe, at their usual table alone. A norm. Jenna\u2014who they\u2019d never met\u2014had plopped her food tray onto their table and sat with a vibrant and disarming smile. \u201cThis is okay, right?\u201d she\u2019d asked and proceeded to eat her lunch. Imogene remembered exchanging a wary look with Vempur, both of them positive they were being set up somehow, but lunch after lunch passed with Jenna returning to their table until that became the norm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cSpeaking of Vempur,\u201d Imogene started, \u201cwhere is he?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHow should I know?\u201d Jenna asked, straightening her desk. A nervous tick. Imogene knew another of her habits was braiding her hair, undoing it, then braiding it over and over. \u201cYou talk to him more than I do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Imogene observed Jenna adjust her Com, then readjust it as if deciding she didn\u2019t like it where it was and moving it to a new place on her desk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cEverything okay? You only fidget when you\u2019re nervous.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jenna turned in her chair and clasped her hands together. \u201cStop studying me. It\u2019s unnerving. And I\u2019m not nervous. Everything is fine. Why wouldn\u2019t it be? How are you? Better than after spar?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n A change in topic. Curious, Imogene thought. \u201cYou already know how I feel. I think I expounded on my feelings ad nauseam at the Globe earlier.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n Jenna nodded. \u201cUnderstandable. And Timaeus\u2013\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Imogene grunted at the sound of Kade\u2019s name and hated that imagining him made her body feel sort of weightless. \u201cHe knew what he was doing.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cHe picked hand-to-hand. Obviously, he would have the upper hand.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jenna made a noise that hummed from her nose. \u201cAnd how would you have felt if he\u2019d picked something where he didn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cGreat!\u201d Imogene said, her voice a bit too bright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jenna swiveled back to face her and narrowed her eyes. \u201cReally? Because I can imagine that conversation. In fact, I think we\u2019ve had it before. Damn him for thinking I\u2019m weak,\u201d she said, dipping her chin to her chest and pitching her voice like Imogene\u2019s, \u201c\u2013and need an advantage.\u201d Jenna lifted her brows in challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Imogene wanted to argue the fact but knew Jenna was right. \u201cThat does sound like something I\u2019ve said.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Jenna smiled. \u201cYou know what I think is interesting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI don\u2019t know if I want to know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cYou sure do a lot of talking about Timaeus Kade.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n As a kid, CL Walters, world revolved around two things: stories and make believe.
